Fall 2008 Newer Faculty Orientation

How to have a rewarding first quarter at Cal Poly

Teachers who are new to Cal Poly will gain valuable information and skills meant to facilitate success in the classroom. Open to faculty members, graduate teaching associates and assistants, and instructional staff members.

As a result of the orientation, participants will be able to:

  • Develop a syllabus that incorporates teaching philosophy, learning outcomes, assessment requirements, and course policies.
  • Know how to apply practices that facilitate the learning process.
  • Explore resources available and the responsibilities required to facilitate your career at Cal Poly.
  • Build a network with faculty in different disciplines which creates a synergy on campus.
  • Know how to meet the scheduled requirements as a teacher and a scholar.

The orientation will cover:

  • The Fundamentals of Good Teaching
  • Learning Outcomes and Assessment
  • The Classroom Environment
  • Writing an Effective Syllabus
  • Classroom Management
  • The University
  • Student Interaction with Faculty
  • Retention, Promotion, and Tenure

*The faculty contract specifies that the faculty work schedule begins on Monday, September 15 and the faculty are not expected to attend the workshop on September 12; however, many new faculty have chosen this earlier date because it gives them additional time to use workshop material in preparation of their classes.

Date: Friday, September 12, and Friday, September 19
Time: 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
Location: Kennedy Library, Third Floor

Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Pre-registration encouraged by September 9 for the first session and September 16 for the second session.
