Montana 1948 by Larry Watson

PREFACE: The Cal Poly Shared Reading Program seeks volunteer discussion facilitators for our 2008 events. All new Cal Poly students will be asked to read the PREFACE book over the summer and be prepared to discuss it with PREFACE volunteer discussion facilitators during WOW. The book will be “Montana 1948” by Larry Watson. New PREFACE volunteer discussion facilitators are asked to attend one of the PREFACE Information Sessions in May. Discussion facilitators receive a free copy of the book, support materials, and an exclusive session with the author. Faculty Writing Brush-Up

Do any of these situations apply to you?

  • You'd like to five all your assignments in writing, but you're just not confident enough that your writing is professional and correct.
  • You're working on a paper, proposal, or project of your own and aren't quite sure how to polish your prose.
  • You've forgotten (or neverreally learned) the distinction between "lie" and "lay."
  • You're worried about writing well enough to respond to student work effectively.

If any of these issues sound familiar, the CTL can help. If you're struggling with your own writing, or your prose just needs a little polish, come to our faculty writing brush up! CTL provides the goodies; we'll provide the handouts, the stimulating topics, and a few jokes; you'll provide yourself and your ideas and concerns.

Date: Thursdays April 17 and 24
Time: 3:10 pm to 5:00 pm
Location: Kennedy Library, room 510B

For more information, or to sign up, contact Deborah Wilhelm (dwilhelm@calpoly.edu or 756-7038) or the CTL (ctl@calpoly.edu or 756-7002)

A student has a death in the family and comes to you for help.
What do you do?

A freshman is struggling with calculus andneeds support.
How can you help him?

WINGED

Your students can become better thinkers, readers, and writers—and you can make your classes more focused and relevant, including reducing both your grading load and your worry load. Cal Poly’s WINGED (Writing in Generally Every Discipline), a workshop series for faculty from across the disciplines, offers conversation, insight, and pragmatic strategies for a variety of classroom concerns:

  • Encouraging students to think critically about course content
  • Assuring that they complete and understand course reading
  • Increasing the quality of their projects, exams, or papers

As a WINGED workshop participant, you can join this faculty conversation about creating student accountability for course content, using good assignment design and assessment, and a variety of additional topics specific to your needs. The four-meeting series is designed to give you a bag of “magic tricks” (that is, appropriate pedagogical practices) that you can take immediately into your classroom and use to your—and your students’—benefit.

One WINGED seminar will be offered during Spring Quarter 2008:

Date: Tuesdays (April 15, 22, and 29, and May 6)
Time: 3:10 to 5:00 pm
Location: Kennedy Library, Room 510B

For more information or to sign up, contact Deborah Wilhelm (dwilhelm@calpoly.edu, 756-7038) or the CTL (ctl@calpoly.edu, 756-7002)
